Jack Doherty
29th July 2010 – 11th September 2010
As part of August Craft Month 2010 OBG is exhibiting in partnership with Craft NI a showcase of the ceramic work by Jack Doherty. Chair of the Craft Potters’ Association and lead potter at the Leach Pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall, Jack Doherty is an energetic and key figure in British ceramics. As former student at the Ulster College of Art and Design Jack studied ceramics and continued to practice ceramics in Ireland until 1983 when he moved to Herefordshire, England and specialised in soda glazed porcelain. His career has involved exhibiting regularly in England and abroad, teaching in various colleges, running workshops locally and internationally for students to hone his technique. Doherty has also had significant involvement in the promoting of ceramics to a wider audience.
Curated by Marta Donaghey, Contemporary Ceramics London, this exhibition in Belfast is a showcase for a new body of work. Marta commends Jack Doherty for his dedication to promoting the art of ceramic making and pottery as she stated -
“In these days of technology and gadgets that allow us to have so many experiences ‘by proxy’ in a virtual space, people like Jack Doherty are very important to keep us in touch with human creativity and the need to express it.”
Marta Donaghey, Curator (2007).
